Space for knowledge, communication and well-being

FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure is a renowned institution for scientific information in Germany. As a member of the Leibniz Association, it provides science and industry with research and patent information and develops innovative information infrastructures. In order to promote communication and collaboration within the organisation, FIZ Karlsruhe decided to redesign the kitchenette on the ground floor of the building on the KIT North Campus. The previously little-used space was to be transformed into a work café with a cosy atmosphere that can be used not only during breaks but also for smaller meetings.

Workcafé FIZ Karlsruhe | oak slat construction partitioning the cafeteria into different zones

FIZ Karlsruhe commissioned feco with the planning and realisation of the project. feco impressed with an innovative concept that makes optimum use of the available space and creates different areas for different needs. The centrepiece of the work café is an oak slat construction that spans the corridor and the sub-areas. It gives the room a cosy and natural atmosphere and creates a visual connection between the two sides of the room. The slats also serve as room dividers, separating the different zones without isolating them. On the left-hand side is the new kitchenette with a counter and bar stools, which invites people to linger and chat. Here, employees can grab a coffee or a snack and chat in a relaxed atmosphere. Opposite, a long bench offers space for a shared meal or a larger meeting in a relaxed atmosphere.

On the right-hand side, there are several small meeting zones at standing height, which are framed in the oak slats. Employees can meet here in smaller groups and concentrate on their work. The zones are equipped with high tables, stools and whiteboards and can be used flexibly. The lounge area opens out onto the terrace with a large corner sofa that creates a cosy living room atmosphere. Here, employees can retreat, relax or chat informally. The view of the greenery and the natural colours enhance the sense of well-being. The Workcafé at FIZ Karlsruhe is a successful example of the modern and multifunctional design of a communication and team area. An unused kitchenette has been transformed into an attractive meeting place that motivates and inspires employees.
